Talanquer et al, Thinking and Learning in Nested Systems: The Classroom Level, J Chem Educ (2024) 101, 295-306 (https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jchemed.3c00839)
A multitude of factors affect the complex phenomenon of learning. Beyond those involving students at the individual level, there many layers of external and institutional factors that also come into play. This article is the second in a series looking at the research from the last 25 years concerning such issues, with the first article having focused on the cognitive aspects focusing on individuals. As stated in the introductory section of this article, this paper aims to “analyze the actors and factors that research suggests shape the complex social and knowledge dynamics in classrooms, which are affected by interactions with components at other levels. Through this analysis, we characterize and highlight major implications for curriculum, instruction, and assessment…, particularly at the college level, seeking to contribute to the dissemination of evidence-based reform efforts”.
While concrete examples are drawn from the chemistry discipline, the themes, discussions and research in this article are relevant to all science and engineering disciplines at the university level.
