This Year's Almedalen Week
As autumn settles in Uppsala and the semester gains momentum, preparations for next year's participation in Almedalen Week begin. But first, we look back at the faculty's involvement in this year's Almedalen Week at the end of June.
Several of our researchers participated, either together with partner organizations or through their own arrangements. Some also received support from the faculty, as part of our efforts to help researchers collaborate and engage in public discourse.
Christian Rohner, professor at the Department of IT, organized a seminar on the upcoming legislation on cybersecurity and the government's initiative for Cybercampus Sweden. Security experts from Swedish companies managing critical infrastructure, the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection, legal experts, and academic representatives contributed their perspectives. The discussions during the seminar emphasized the need for increased coordination in this area.
MedTech Science and Innovation Centre (MTSI) is a collaboration between Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital. Maria Tenje, head of MTSI and a Professor with the Department of Materials Science, organized a seminar on the family perspective on technological development. She summarizes:
With a broad panel consisting of the Minister for the Elderly and Social Insurance, the director of Uppsala University Hospital, as well as representatives from 1177 and a family association, we were able to highlight how new technology and digitalization affect families from several perspectives, based on the center’s research. Fortunately, we also found ways forward.
Parts of the faculty leadership were also present, and our Vice-Rector, Charlotte Platzer-Björkman, participated in, among other things, roundtable discussions with Vinnova and the Association of Swedish Engineering Industries. The background to this was Vinnova’s government assignment to identify and propose strategically important technologies for Sweden, a discussion where the faculty needs to be represented. Charlotte also participated in seminars regarding Uppsala Municipality's initiative for an innovation cluster and the development of Främre Boländerna.
For the faculty, Almedalen Week concluded with a lunch for invited guests. The Vice-Chancellors from Uppsala, Chalmers, SLU, and Lund participated, along with state secretaries from the Ministry of Education, as well as representatives from industry, the municipality, and our faculty.
Are you interested in collaborating? Your department head will receive information about next year's support if you wish to apply for funding to participate in Almedalen 2025.
