The Faculty of Science and Technology hosted representatives from government agencies and industry at the Ångström Laboratory for discussions on space-related research and development.

On 13 March, the Faculty of Science and Technology hosted a meeting on space-related research at the Ångström Laboratory, with the aim of bringing together key actors around current research and development topics. Representatives from the Swedish National Space Agency, the Swedish Armed Forces’ space division, the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce in Uppsala, and Uppsala Innovation Centre attended, together with researchers from the faculty.

The meeting was opened by Marcus Lindahl, Vice-Dean for Collaboration, and Staffan Svärd, Deputy Vice-Rector, who welcomed participants and introduced the activities at the Ångström Laboratory.

Research related to space

During the morning, a broad range of space-related research was presented, with Vice-Rector Charlotte Platzer Björkman leading the discussions. The presentations included studies on how cells respond to microgravity and how satellite-based remote sensing is used to monitor glaciers and ice sheets.

Research on programming models for radiation-tolerant processors in satellites and optimisation methods for complex space applications was also highlighted. The programme further included presentations on the Ångström Space Technology Centre (ÅSTC) as well as research in space plasma physics, planetary physics and space weather.

Current initiatives in the space sector

Director General Ella Carlsson and Head of Research Johan Köhler presented the Swedish National Space Agency’s activities and new initiatives, including dual-use aspects, research schools, competence centres and the satellite value chain.

Patrik Perers, Chair of the Swedish Armed Forces’ research and technology development in space, outlined ongoing and future research and development collaborations.

A growing sector

The space sector is rapidly evolving, with increasing interaction between technology, research and societal needs. Uppsala University is well positioned to contribute broad scientific expertise to the growing Swedish space ecosystem.

The next step may be to lay the groundwork for collaborations with companies in the region active in the space sector. If you have questions or are looking for contacts for further collaboration, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our research advisers at researchsupport-teknat@uu.se.
