Panel discussion: Flexibility and Stability in the Academic Career Path

A panel discussion about understanding and finding better solutions for our incomprehensible academic career track!

Time and place: 17 May 2024, 9:00-12:00, live stream on Youtube.

Welcome to an event about career paths for early career researchers in Sweden. Universities offer inconsistent and unstable academic career tracks, reducing their international competitiveness and ability to harness the enormous potential of academics in Sweden. How can we create the best conditions for early-career researchers to thrive and contribute maximally to their local, national, and international academic communities? The event will feature talks and discussions with key players and decision-makers in academia and government.

  • How can we create standardized career paths/titles post-PhD until tenure across different universities in Sweden, or is flexibility in career progression essential to accommodate diverse academic environments?
  • Should Sweden aim for standardized promotion criteria in academia (BUL to UL, and UL to Professor), and how should individuals who do not get promoted be supported?
  • How can we ensure equal opportunities for young researchers across different demographic groups?
  • How can we balance the need for financial sustainability to stabilize academic careers without creating inflexible opportunities for young researchers?

This panel discussion is arranged by Future Faculty, National Junior Faculty of Sweden and the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University.
