The four sections of the framework program
Horizon Europe has three pillars, which include both basic and applied research. The program also has a horisontal section, which interconnect the three pillars and aims to broaden participation and disseminate excellence as well as reform and strengthen the European R&D system.
Pillar 1: Excellent Science
Excellent Science Includes both basic and applied research: European Research Council (ERC), Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions (MSCA) and Research Infrastructures.
Pillar 2: Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness
Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness Includes calls for collaboration projects within six research areas. The pillar also holds the parts Missions, European Partnerships and Joint Research Centres.
Pillar 3: Innovative Europe
Includes basic research, applied research and commercializing the research findings. The pillar holds European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), European Innovation Council (EIC) and European Innovation Ecosystems.
