A new feature in Studium: Discussion Summary

Studium has a preview for a new feature called Discussion Summary, which utilizes generative AI to provide teachers with concise summaries of key points, questions, and ideas from discussion threads.

The summary feature provides a quick overview of the main points of long discussions, especially useful with large groups. It can be used to identify recurring themes or issues that may need further explanation or discussion. It is possible to specify particular topics or points to focus on, and customize the results as needed. A new summary can be generated when more students contribute to capture the development of the discussion. It allows the teacher to guide upcoming lessons or to address common misunderstandings.

Key Features and Benefits

  • The feature uses generative AI to create summaries of discussion threads, saving instructors time.
  • Summaries are only visible to instructors and administrators, not to students.
  • Teachers can refine summaries by specifying desired outputs or topics to focus on.
  • Summaries can be regenerated to include later student posts or to focus on different aspects of the discussion.

How Discussion Summary Works

  1. The feature is enabled at the course level through the Feature Options tab in Course Settings.
  2. Once enabled, instructors will see a "Summarize" button at the top of discussion threads.
  3. After students have replied to a discussion post, instructors can click the Summarize button to generate an AI-powered summary of all key points from student replies.
  4. The summary appears in a box below the original discussion post and is only visible to the instructor.
