“Science Fika” – fika with a passion for science
What gives rise to stars and black holes? How many worlds are there? Which mechanisms impair our health? Together, humanity and science may be able to answer these questions at a “Science Fika” – coffee and science session – at Uppsala City Library.
Since autumn 2022, a group of doctoral students in fields such as surgical sciences and public health sciences have been arranging a “Science Fika”. Three doctoral students, Oreste Affatato, Amelia Dahlén and Markus de Ruijter, make up the “Science Fika” committee. Every other weekend during each semester, the public has been invited to various scientific lectures at Uppsala City Library.
The invited speakers explain a specific scientific area for around 20 minutes in simple Swedish or English. After the presentation, the audience gets the chance to mix with the other attendees and discuss topics more informally while enjoying coffee. A different kind of “fika”, in other words.
The talks so far in 2023 have examined topics such as physical activity, the brain’s reward system and Alzheimer’s disease. The next lecture will be held in Swedish on Saturday 6 May at 14:00, with the title “Anaesthesia for children: how do we know if small children’s brains are affected?”
