In early September 2024, the Matariki network held a meeting in Uppsala with around 30 Vice-Chancellors and vice-rectors from the various higher education institutions in the network.

Uppsala University is part of the Matariki network, which is named after the Maori word for the Pleiades constellation. It is a university network with members from Australia, Europe, North America, New Zealand and now Africa.

New member: University of the Western Cape

During the visit to Uppsala, the University of the Western Cape became a new partner university in the network, thus becoming the first new partner university since Matariki was established in 2010.

The inclusion of a new university in Matariki opens up new opportunities for collaboration for researchers at Uppsala University.

Call for proposals for multilateral projects

The network has announced a call for seed funding for bi-, tri- and multilateral research projects involving researchers from at least two universities that form part of the network.

Applications from all thematic areas are welcome, but applications linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals are particularly welcome. The projects must demonstrate that they are in line with the network’s five guiding principles and values (see link in the box).

Applications from early-career researchers (up to six years after achieving a doctorate) are encouraged.

The final date for applications is 6 December 2024.
