All Windows computers at the University will be upgraded to the Windows 11 operating system in spring 2025. This is because Microsoft will stop updating and providing support for Windows 10 in autumn 2025.
The main reason for the upgrade to Windows 11 to maintain security within the University’s IT environment. The goal is to complete the transition before the summer holidays in 2025 to ensure the stability, continuity and security of our IT systems.
This means that all University employees who have a Windows computer will need to upgrade their computer to Windows 11 in spring 2025. Windows 11 is already available to download in the Software centre on your computer – see the section on upgrading yourself below.
Note that this upgrade does not apply to Mac or Linux computers. There are also exceptions for a few instrument computers that need to use older operating systems.
Timetable for the mandatory upgrade
A timetable has been drawn up for when the mandatory upgrade will be applied in each department or equivalent. These mandatory upgrades will be spread out throughout the spring semester to enable UIT to support users and provide support during the upgrade. These upgrades only apply to Windows computers managed by UIT.
The timetable is available on the Staff Gateway, where you can also read more about the upgrade.
Upgrade yourself when it suits you
To make it easier for you, you can upgrade your computer yourself via the Software centre at your convenience. Instructions and a guide for upgrading your computer can be found on the Staff Gateway.
The upgrade takes about 1–2 hours, and you will need to remain connected to the network at all times during this period. UIT recommends that you remain in the University’s premises and that you are connected to the network by cable during the entire upgrade.
You can use the computer during the first 30–60 minutes of the upgrade, until the computer needs to restart. After that, you will not be able to use the computer for a while, but you don’t have to sit at the computer until the upgrade is complete either.
What’s new in Windows 11?
The new Windows 11 operating system means that the user interface will look somewhat different compared to Windows 10. It also includes some new features. You can read more about this on Microsoft’s Windows 11 Support pages.
