The University Board decided on 19 February 2025 which student associations will be granted the status of student union at the University for the next three years.
The Higher Education Act contains rules determining which student associations are granted the status of student union and are permitted to represent the students. Following an application from the student association, if the association is deemed to satisfy the conditions in the Higher Education Act, the University decides to grant student union status.
“Student influence and student engagement are important to Uppsala University. We particularly appreciate the good climate of cooperation that exists between the student unions in Uppsala University's United Student Unions. We currently have good cooperation with the student unions, which we will build on in the coming years”, says Coco Norén, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Uppsala University.
Only one student association can be granted the status of a student union for a geographical area or organisational part of the University. If several student associations apply to be granted student union status for the same area or part of the organisation, the University’s decision must be based on the number of members.
Student unions in the coming period
Student associations have been permitted to apply for student union status for the period 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2028, and the University Board has decided that the following student associations will be granted the status of student union for the period:
- The Gotland Student Union Rindi for the geographical area Campus Gotland. This means that Rindi represents all organisational parts of Campus Gotland. Other student unions therefore have an exception for Campus Gotland, which they do not represent.
- The Pharmaceutical Student Union will be given the status of student union for the Faculty of Pharmacy.
- The Uppsala Union of Engineering and Science Students for the Faculty of Science and Technology.
- Uppsala Law Student Association for the Faculty of Law.
- The Uppsala Business and Economics Students Association for the Department of Business Studies, the Department of Economics, the Department of Statistics and the Department of Economic History.
- Uppsala Student Union for the Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Languages, Faculty of Educational Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Social Sciences (with the exception of the Department of Economic History, Department of Business Studies, Department of Economics and Department of Statistics).
In this applications round, two student associations applied for student union status for the Department of Economic History and the Department of Statistics respectively. The Uppsala Business and Economics Students Association has the most members in both of these departments and has thus been granted the status of student union for these departments.
