Report on need for humanities in professional education
In summer 2025, the think tank Humtank published a report on the need for humanities in professional programmes.
The report “Humaniora i professionsutbildningar – kunskap för komplexa yrken (Humanities in professional education – knowledge for complex professions)” is based on a qualitative survey of programme directors in engineering, medical and police training programmes at Swedish universities.
Humtank is a think tank for research and education in the humanities, backed by fourteen humanities faculties at Swedish universities and colleges.
In summary, the report finds that the humanities are integrated to varying degrees and in different ways in the programmes examined in the report.
The survey responses show that the programme directors see a need for the humanities in their programmes from the point of view of graduates being able to function in their future professions and to achieve the goals expressed in the Higher Education Ordinance.
The report concludes with recommendations both at national level and for individual institutions and programmes.
