Uppsala University continues to climb in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking of the world’s top universities. This year, the University is the only Swedish institution to have advanced since 2024 and comes in 128th place, two places higher than last year. This is the third year in a row that Uppsala University has moved up on the list.

The THE rankings use 5 main indicators and 18 subsidiary indicators. The University scores slightly lower in all main indicators except teaching, where the score is slightly higher than last year.

“The teaching indicator includes several metrics, including staff-to-student ratio, income for education and teaching reputation, and the University is making progress in all subsidiary indicators relating to teaching,” says Emma Östlund, Controller at the Planning Division at Uppsala University.

The indicators measuring research show, among other things, that the University is losing points in terms of average citations per publication, while productivity measured by the number of articles in relation to institutional size, on the other hand, is improving.

Competition intensified

Competition has intensified significantly. Over the past decade, the number of universities ranked has more than doubled, from 981 to 2,129.

Karolinska Institutet is the highest ranked Swedish insitution, in 53rd place, followed by Lund University in 95th place and KTH in 98th place. Stockholm University falls out of the top 200 this year and does not receive its own ranking but is placed in the 200–250 range, along with Gothenburg University, Chalmers and Linköping University.

The highest ranked university in the world is the University of Oxford in the UK, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA. Third place is shared by Princeton University (USA) and the University of Cambridge (UK). Harvard University (USA) remains in fifth place.
