Directors have now been appointed for four research institutes within Uppsala University Future Institutes (UUniFI), the University’s new research initiative.

In June 2025, the University Board established the Uppsala University Future Institutes (UUniFI). The purpose of UUniFI is to create a University-wide, internationally leading research environment that facilitates the pooling of excellence around challenge-driven, boundary-crossing research.

Under the UUniFI umbrella, five thematic research institutes have been established, one of which, the Uppsala University Conflicting Objectives Research Nexus (UUniCORN), is already up and running. A sixth institute will focus on knowledge and learning about inter- and multidisciplinarity and will build on the activities conducted at the Centre for Integrated Research on Culture and Society (CIRCUS).

Four new directors

The four directors now appointed by an interim governing board will each lead a research institute within UUniFI.

  • Malin Göteman, Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, will be the director of the green energy transition research institute.
  • Åsa Johansson, Professor at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, will be the director of the precision health research institute.
  • Sven Nelander, Professor at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, will be the director of the AI research institute.
  • Olof Åslund, Professor at the Department of Economics, will be the director of the migration research institute.

Earlier in autumn 2025, Tobias Sjöblom, Professor at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, was appointed head of UUniFI.

Mats Målqvist, Professor at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, became director of UUniCORN and Professor Claes-Fredrik Helgesson director of CIRCUS at an earlier date.

UUniFI will start its activities in January 2026.
