New routine for submitting claims for reimbursement for medicines
From 1 January 2024, claims for reimbursement for medicines can only be submitted and paid once a year. Transitional rules apply to expenses for 2023, but these expenses must be reported no later than 31 March 2024.
From 1 January 2024, claims for reimbursement for prescription medicines that qualify for the high-cost protection scheme can only be submitted once a year.
Furthermore, claims must be submitted no later than in January of the year following the calendar year in which the costs were incurred.
To be entitled to reimbursement for medicines, you also need to provide evidence of the costs in the form of a register extract from the Swedish eHealth Agency’s high-cost database.
Transitional rules
Costs for medicines up to 31 December 2023 can be reported under the old rules (i.e. by reporting costs with receipts) by 31 March 2024.
Therefore, if you have medication receipts for expenses in 2023 that you have not yet registered, remember to register them in Primula by 31 March 2024.
Only applies to medication costs
Please note that the above applies only to reimbursement for the cost of medicines.
There has been no change in the routine for reporting expenses for medical treatment. Expenses for medical treatment can therefore continue to be submitted on an ongoing basis with receipts.
Amendment to the central agreement
This change in the routine for submitting medication expenses for reimbursement is based on a change agreed by the central parties in the 2023 round of negotiations.
