This spring’s doctoral degree conferment ceremony will run over two days on 23–24 May 2024. This is the first time the ceremony will run over more than one day.

The main reason for the expanded format on this particular occasion is that the ceremony has been divided up between the faculties, which in turn is due to the unusually large number of jubilee doctors at this spring’s ceremony.

“1974 was the last time doctoral degrees were conferred under the old arrangements, unless an exemption was granted, which was why many doctoral students were keen to graduate in time for the conferment ceremony that year,” says Per Ström, academy steward in the University Administration.

The number of jubilee doctors usually varies greatly from year to year, but has risen steadily over time. This year, however, breaks all records. As many as 104 jubilee doctors will be in this spring ceremony alone, but next year the University will be back to a more normal number.

Unusual to have jubilee degree conferrers

It is not only the expanded format due to the large number of jubilee doctors who graduated fifty years ago that is special about this particular conferment ceremony.

It is also noteworthy that there will be no fewer than three jubilee doctoral degree conferrers at this celebration, two of whom will participate in the ceremony itself.

“Only twice before at Uppsala University have jubilee doctoral degree conferrers played an active role in the ceremony,” says Per Ström.

Jubilee and cannon salutes

A person who graduated with a degree of doctor fifty years ago at Uppsala University automatically becomes a jubilee doctor. The first jubilee doctoral degrees were conferred in the Faculty of Medicine in 1804.

A jubilee doctoral degree conferrer is a professor who fifty years ago served as degree conferrer.

Cannon salutes at the ceremonies are audible across much of Uppsala, depending on the wind and the weather. Unfortunately, the cannon fire leads many people to contact the police and other authorities to ask what is going on.

If you have a chance, please spread the word to friends, relatives, colleagues and others – tell them cannon salutes will be fired in Uppsala from Uppsala Castle on 23–24 May 2024, as follows:

  • 07:00 on 23 May
  • at intervals between approximately 12:45 and 15:00 on 23–24 May.
