Rent out a room to a student

The start of the academic year and the semester is a good opportunity for anyone willing and able to rent out a room to a student. Photo: Qimage.

If you have the possibility, why not take the opportunity to rent out a room to a student?

The academic year is about to start and Uppsala and Visby are filling up with students. Like anyone else, students need somewhere to live. If you are able to rent out a room to a student, this would be much appreciated.

Visby

In Visby you can advertise rooms for students via the website Gotlands studentbostad, which is organised by Rindi (the Gotland students’ union) in cooperation with Region Gotland and Uppsala University (not available in English)

Uppsala

In Uppsala you can make use of the website Studentboet instead. Studentboet was started on the initiative of Uppsala Student Union and is funded by Uppsala municipality, Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Is it taxable?

Note that a person renting out accommodation sometimes has to pay tax on the rental income and since 1 January 2023 the Swedish Tax Agency has received information from housing agencies using digital platforms, such as the websites mentioned above, about people who have used the platform and the rental income they have earned during the year.
