Uppsala University has climbed 10 places from last year to 130th place in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, which list the top 2,000 higher education institutions worldwide. Uppsala comes fourth in Sweden, after Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Lund University.

The THE rankings use 5 main indicators and 18 subsidiary indicators. Uppsala University has moved up in several of them.

“The clearest improvement relates to the main indicator ‘research quality’, which is composed of different ways of measuring research impact based on citations,” says Emma Östlund, Controller at the Planning Division at Uppsala University.

Advances for the second year in a row

Last year, Uppsala University also advanced on the list, by eight places on that occasion. The upward trend pleases Vice-Chancellor Anders Hagfeldt.

“It’s good that the trend is positive and I’m glad we’re moving in the right direction,” says Hagfeldt, adding: “But of course we’re not satisfied, our ambition is to be at least in the top 100.”

Compared with last year, Uppsala and Lund University have improved most, by 10 and 11 places respectively. Three Swedish universities are now in the top 100, with Karolinska Institutet in 49th place, followed by Lund University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in joint 95th place.
