University’s X account deactivated
Uppsala University’s account on Swedish X (Twitter) has been deactivated. This is because of the changing climate of debate on X and a lack of resources.
Uppsala University’s official Swedish account on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has been deactivated and will no longer be actively used.
“The decision to deactivate the account on Swedish X stems from the fact that the climate of debate on X has hardened and it no longer makes sense for the University to participate on the platform. But it’s also a matter of resources, we need to eliminate some tasks. We don't have the resources to be on all platforms,” says Pernilla Björk, Director of Communications.
There is a general trend for organisations and authorities to leave X precisely because the climate of debate on the platform has changed. Examples of other organisations that have recently left X include Lund University and Radio Sweden.
English X still active
Note that this decision applies to Swedish X. The University-wide account on English X will remain active with a focus on research communication.
“We will continue to keep English X active as EU and European networks are active on X. There are research projects that are required by funders to communicate their research via X.”
Can individual researchers continue to have their own account on X?
“Yes, of course researchers can continue to have active accounts on X if they consider it a good and relevant communication channel for their needs. This decision only concerns the University-wide account on Swedish X, which is managed by the Communications Division.”
The other social media channels where Uppsala University has an official University-wide account are not affected either. This means that the University’s presence on Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin will continue as before.
