Guidelines for admission to a later part of the programme - Faculty of Science and Technology

Faculty of Science and Technology

Approved by the Faculty Board of Science and Technology on 11 May 2023

Introduction

The syllabus for the respective programme at the Faculty states the entry requirements, selection, application period, and whether late application for admission to a later part of the programme is possible. If the number of applicants is larger than the number of available places in the programme during the semester in question, a selection criterion is applied. The number of places is dimensioned based on the number of beginners in the respective programme, as stated in the Faculty’s operational plan each year. Selection shall be carried out according to the same criteria for all programmes within the Faculty, except for international collaboration programmes.

Selection criteria

If the number of applicants is larger than the number of available places[1] according to the dimensioning applicable, the selection criterion of average grade[2] on prerequisite courses from a higher education institution (courses relevant to the programme) is used.

Courses that use a grading system other than U, 3, 4, 5 are excluded from the calculation of average grade for this purpose, unless they are included in the conversion table below. The number of completed credits is not included in the selection. It only provides information on eligibility and which semester is relevant for the student.

Example: An applicant for a Bachelor's programme who is eligible for admission to semester 4 of year 2 has 55 credits in completed courses relevant to the programme, i.e. prerequisite courses. These 55 credits include:

  • Course 1: A 15-credit course, of which 10 credits are relevant to the programme and do not overlap with previous courses, grade 4 (10*4 below)
  • Course 2: 10 credits, grade G of U/G (not included in calculation below)
  • Course 3: 15 credits, grade 5 (15*5 below)
  • Course 4: 5 credits, grade 3 (5*3 below)
  • Course 5: 15 credits, grade D (15*3.5 below)

For Course 1, weight is calculated as 10 credits. Course 2 is not used to calculate average grade.

The average grade is thus: (10*4+15*5+5*3+15*3.5)/45=182.5/45=4.05

[1] The number of available places is defined as the number of students in the Faculty’s operational plan

(https://www.regler.uu.se/dokument/?contentId=820526) for the current cohort minus the number of students in the current cohort with first-time registration in the programme with a course start in the previous semester (i.e. if the students are to be admitted in autumn 2023, it is compared with the number registered in spring 2023). The number of registered students in the current cohort can be provided by the senior faculty administrator upon request.

[2] This calculation must be included in the decision documentation.
