Call for candidates for Vice President for Research

Background

With a view to strengthening the University’s performance in research, the Vice-Chancellor has decided to establish a new position of Vice President for Research. The position involves being part of the University Management and representing the University on research issues both at home and abroad.

Most other higher education institutions in Sweden have a designated vice-rector for research. In Uppsala University’s current organisation, research issues are managed by vice-rectors and deans within their respective disciplinary domains, while University-wide research issues are managed by the Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

An academic position is now being established to further strengthen Uppsala’s profile internationally as a research university. The holder of this new position will work with research issues affecting the University as a whole, and be able to represent the University in research contexts.

What the position entails

As Vice President for Research, you will be part of and work with the University Management. Your responsibilities are to:

  • Pursue and coordinate University-wide matters related to:
    • research ethics
    • research infrastructure
    • open science
    • research funding
    • other research-related issues as instructed by the Vice-Chancellor.
  • Represent the University in internal and external contexts, within Sweden as well as internationally. This includes events, conferences, and other gatherings.
  • Contribute to strengthening the University’s position in research.
  • The new role does not affect the responsibilities that vice-rectors and deans have today. The Vice President for Research will be a co-opted member of the University Management Council. When the terms of office of the current Advisers to the Vice-Chancellor on Research Infrastructure and Research Ethics expire, their duties will be taken over by the Vice President for Research.

Hours and term of office

The position is intended to make up 80 per cent of a full-time position, with the initial term of office between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2028, renewable.

Qualifications for the position

  • Be a professor and an employee of Uppsala University.
  • Have solid experience of research and a good awareness of the research being conducted at Uppsala University as well as the research landscape in general, both at home and abroad.
  • Have good contacts within the research sector.
  • Have experience of leadership and Uppsala University’s organisation.
  • Have excellent communication skills, verbal and written, in Swedish and in English.
  • Be collaborative, with a high level of integrity.
