Client management for Mac

The client platform for Apple devices manages Mac computers, among other things. The components of the platform are described below.

A brand new Mac ordered through UIT is something you can easily get started with on your own.

An unmanaged Mac owned by Uppsala University can be connected to the client platform for Apple devices. Contact itsupport@uu.se for assistance.

PLEASE NOTE that only university owned computers are allowed to be enrolled to the client platform.

A managed Mac has, among other things, access to a self-service portal ("Self Service"). Self Service allows you to quickly and easily install and order the software you need. UIT regularly distributes software updates via Self Service. Self Service also provides links to other IT-related services and tools that can help you as a user, for example, when you have a support issue with UIT and when you need to reinstall or update macOS.

Updates to common software are distributed on a regular basis. In general, these are made available via the "Self Service" portal with an associated deadline by when the software update needs to be installed. You can install available updates yourself at an appropriate time before the deadline in the Self Service portal. When the deadline expires, a notification is shown on the screen to inform you that the software will be shut down within a certain time in order for the update to be installed.

When important updates to MacOS are available and not already installed on your Mac, a window will open to tell you this and when the deadline to install the updates will expire. Before the deadline to install the updates, you have the option to be reminded about the update at a later time if you are too busy to install the update at the moment. Do this by clicking on the drop-down menu at the bottom right of the window where it says "Defer".

Users may receive information or questions from UIT directly on their screens from time to time. Please see below for what these information boxes and notifications look like.

A managed Mac has a customized login window with a theme from Uppsala University. There is also a tool installed to ensure that the password for your user account, which is named with your AKKA ID at Uppsala University, is kept in sync. In other words, the password you use to log in to your Mac is the same as the one you use for most other IT services at Uppsala University.

Microsoft Outlook is the recommended email client for reading your email. Outlook is installed together with Microsoft Office using Self Service.

Printing is done via the eduPrint-UU print queue, which is installed by default on your computer. Visit the eduPrint information page for more information.

Remote support is provided via the TeamViewer tool installed by default on the computer (located among the other software in the Applications folder, which can be found via Finder).

At the top right of the screen you will find an icon that looks like a triangle. Via this icon you will find shortcuts/links to file servers, password change, the Staff Portal and Self Service. In the macOS dock, you will find another shortcut to Self Service.
