In this workshop we direct our attention to issues of heritage and transformation, power and money—of "heritage washing".
As preparation for the discussion, we attach a text by Colin Sterling (2020) which deals with "heritage washing" and the "knotted relationship between heritage and urban development".
During the workshop we will provide some examples of recent "redevelopment activities" in Malmö and Stockholm, where "culture" and "heritage" are put in focus and are utilized. As geographers interested in heritage and planning, we have noticed that we react to these trends. They rub and intrigue us in different ways. They give rise to desires to scrutinize and map everything that is happening and call for attention and possibly also to just shout NOOO! But they also spark questions about how to get further than that. What critical perspectives can advance an analysis and understanding of this? What are the important questions we need to think about in situations where "heritage" (with all its lists, assessments, and classifications) is put to use and placed seemingly at the center of attention of, for example, urban or rural (re)development? All of this are things we would like to address during the workshop.
