"Developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning present a great opportunity for mathematicians to solve many practical problems in industry, and in fact many problems require a mathematical understanding to be solved in practice. But as a mathematician, you often need to be proactive and identify and solve problems in the business yourself. So it is important to have both depth and breadth, both in maths and statistics per se, but also in other subjects such as programming and machine learning."
