About the Film

Counted Out is an American documentary that premiered in 2024 and has not been publicly released but is only shown at scheduled screenings. The film explores why some people disengage from mathematics at an early stage, unknowingly closing doors to exciting careers in science, technology, medicine, and economics.

Regardless of one’s interests and career path, the film also highlights mathematical literacy as a key factor for democracy and economic opportunity. In a world driven by technology, data, and algorithms, mathematical knowledge determines who understands what is happening, who can make informed decisions, and who has the power to shape our world.

The greatest crises of our time are examined from a mathematical perspective:

  • Political polarisation
  • Racial bias
  • Social injustice
  • Economic inequality
  • Climate change
  • A global pandemic

Ultimately, the film raises a fundamental question for democracy: If we cannot understand the system that governs us, how much power do we really have?

The film is in English with English subtitles.
