The Mathematics Seminar, 7 May: Convergence of interpolation polynomials

On Wednesday it's time for another mathematics seminar in our popular science lecture seriesLinks to an external site.. We welcome all our students and anyone else with an interest in mathematics!

Date: 7 May 2025, 15:15–16:00
Location: Ångström Laboratory, room 4006
Speaker: Marcus Vaktnäs
Organiser: Department of Mathematics
Contact person: Mateusz Stroinski

Abstract:
I will discuss some results regarding how well certain classes of functions can be described as limits of Lagrange interpolation polynomials. These results turn out to depend a lot on the choice of interpolation points. Somewhat surprisingly, equally spaced points are a rather bad choice, but zeros of orthogonal polynomials are much more appropriate.
