About scholarships
The information below concerns the scholarships that are announced by the Scholarships Office at Uppsala University.
All university scholarhips have their own requirnments, but to be eligable to apply you have to be a full time student at Uppsala University or have a personalised study plan from the coordinators for targeted study support. If you are looking for research scholarships you have to be a researcher or associated with Uppsala University.
About the application
All scholarships are applied for online, unless otherwise specified. Once you have logged in and started an application, you can log back in to complete and make changes to it throughout the application period. If you make any changes, you have to save them and submit your application again.
After the deadline it is no longer possible to submit applications, so you must complete and submit your application on time! It is not possible to make changes or add anything to your application once the deadline has passed.
Scanned original documents don’t have to be attested, with the exception of family trees when proving kinship. If you are attaching copies these must be attested, with the exception of transcripts with a control code from Ladok. A copy is attested by two persons (anyone except you) who certify that the copy matches the original. This is done with signatures, clarification of signatures, and phone numbers written on each page of the copy that contains text.
Read about how we process your personal data in the scholarship management system.
What attachments are needed for students at Bachelor's and Master's level?
Check the requirements of the scholarships for which you are applying. Read the scholarship requirements carefully to see what is to be attested. Contact the Scholarships Office well in advance if you are uncertain of what to attach. The documents you attach to your application must be scanned. Permitted file formats are jpg/jpeg, png, bmp and pdf. It is the applicant's responsibility to make sure all attachments are readable.
Below are examples of some of the most common attachments needed.
National official transcript of records
Certification of all higher education studies (with study results), including foreign higher education studies, must always be attached to your application.
Log in to Ladok and download a national official transcript of records. The national official transcript of records shows all completed courses (with grades) that you have taken at Swedish universities. Note that there must be a control code on the certificate, and this code must be clearly visible in the file attached. Also note that the transcript must be valid through the last day of scholarship applications. A screenshot of your accrued credits from for example universityadmissions.se is not an accepted attachment.
If you have just started your studies at Uppsala University and have not yet accrued any credits, you need to attach a registration certificate. Download the registration certificate from Ladok.
Upper secondary school grades
Upper secondary school grades must only be attached if the scholarship for which you are applying has any requirements concerning upper secondary school education. A screen shot from for example universityadmissions.se is not an accepted attachment. Grades from municipal adult education (Komvux), folk high-school and the like are usually not required. Those grades should only be attached if the requirements of the scholarship need to be proved by such certification.
Certificate of student nation membership
Certificate of student nation membership must be attached if you are applying for student nation scholarships. There are a few exceptions, so please read the scholarship requirements carefully. You must pay the membership fee for the current semester and student nation. You must upload a screenshot of your student nation card from the STUK app, or a photo of your student nation card for the current semester. Your student nation card must be valid throughout the whole semester that you are applying for scholarships.
In exceptional cases, you can receive a receipt of paid membership fee from your student nation. The receipt must have a signature and a stamp from the student nation to be valid. A screen shot of a payment is not a valid certification of student nation membership.
Place of birth and civil status
Your place of birth and civil status is confirmed by a population registration certificate. You order the certificate from the Swedish Tax Agency. It is important that you make sure that the kind of population registration certificate you order contains the information needed. Contact the Swedish Tax Agency if you are uncertain of what the different certificates contain.
Membership of the Church of Sweden
Your membership is confirmed by a certificate from the Swedish Church.

The certificate will be sent to you by mail, so be sure to order it well in advance.
What scholarships can I apply for?
On the web page Find scholarships you will find more information about scholarships that are administered by the Scholarships Office. It is only possible to apply for the scholarships that are open for application. In order for a scholarship to open for application, the foundation must have enough funds. The scholarship must also not be occupied by another holder who has been awarded the scholarship for several semesters.
At Find scholarships you can find information about the majority of scholarships at Uppsala University. There you can also see specific requirements for each scholarship.
You must be a full-time student or researcher at Uppsala University in order to be eligible for a scholarship. You must also meet the specific requirements of each scholarship. If you are granted a scholarship for several semesters, you will have to be a full-time student and meet the specific requirements of the scholarship during the entire period. Most scholarships are only for students or researchers at Uppsala University, but not all.
While there is no limit to the number of times you can apply for scholarships, it is not always possible to be awarded a scholarship more than once. The regulations for each scholarship specify the holding time and whether it is possible to be awarded it more than once.
Scholarships for foreign students
Most scholarships advertised by the Scholarships Office can be applied for by all students at Uppsala University, regardless of nationality or citizenship. There are some exceptions so read the regulations for each scholarship carefully.
There are also other potential scholarships for foreign prospective students who are yet to begin their studies at Uppsala University. These scholarships are not listed at Find scholarships and are not administered by the Scholarships Office. You can find information about these kinds of scholarships at the webpages about studies at the Bachelor's and Master's level at Uppsala University.
Exchange studies
During exchange studies it might not be possible for you to keep your scholarship. Contact the Scholarships Office before the exchange for more information.
Travel scholarships and scholarships for studies abroad
Travel scholarships can be used for study and research trips taking place during the current semester (application semester) and/or the two subsequent semesters. It is not possible to apply for travel scholarships for a trip that has already been completed or a trip that started too early before the start of the current semester. It is also not possible to apply for a travel scholarship for a trip that ended prior to the application deadline.
Travel scholarships can be used for travels within Sweden and abroad, depending on the regulations of the scholarship.
Income limit
PhD students can mainly apply for research scholarships, travel scholarships and grants that may be awarded without regard to the income limit.
If you have an income of SEK 200 000/year or more, you cannot be awarded scholarships intended for students at the undergraduate level, but only research and travel scholarships.
The scholarship ceiling – maximum sum
The so-called scholarship ceiling regulates that a student cannot be awarded several smaller scholarships which together exceed the ceiling, currently 38 000 SEK/year. If the scholar is given only one scholarship the sum may exceed the ceiling. Travel and research scholarships are not included in the scholarship ceiling.
If you receive a larger scholarship than the one that you already have, you have to refrain from the scholarship with the smallest sum if the total sum of the scholarships exceeds the scholarship ceiling. Should this be the case, the Scholarships Office will notify you – you don’t need to keep track of this yourself. If the total sum of both scholarships is lower than the scholarship ceiling, you can keep both scholarships.
How is the selection made?
All applications are assessed based on the requirements for each scholarship. Individual scholarship regulations often state that those who are the most “needy” or “studious" have the greatest chance of receiving the scholarship. Therefore the applicants’ academic merits (such as credits awarded and grades achieved) along with the applicant’s financial position (such as income, assets, debts etc.) are often taken into account when processing applications.
You are able to apply for several different scholarships at the same time; this will not negatively affect your chances of being awarded a scholarship.
Research scholarships and certain travel scholarships have different selection criteria and processes.
Granted scholarship
When all scholarship awards have been decided upon, each applicant will receive an email sent to the email address stated in their application. The applicants can then log in and check under the tab “Holding of scholarships” whether or not they have been awarded any scholarships. If you have been awarded a scholarship, you can read the contents of the decision.
Decisions regarding scholarship granting cannot be appealed.
Disbursement of awarded scholarship
When the granting of scholarships is done the scholarship amount for the current semester will be paid. The money will be transferred to the bank account stated in your application and will reach your account within approximately a month of the decision.
When you have been awarded a scholarship that covers several terms you must monitor it each term in order to keep it. You don't need to monitor your scholarship the semester you are granted it.
For research and travel grants, you make a requisition to obtain the funds.
