If you are curious about what it is like to “plunge” into an ice hole and climb out using ice picks under safe and secure conditions, then this is the perfect opportunity!

This Saturday, Uppsala Nature School in collaboration with Upplandsstiftelsen, is organising a day of activities on the ice in Dalbyviken by Hammarskog manson. We will keep an ice hole and huts open to the public if you want to try out what it feels like to plunge into an ice hole and climb out with the help of ice spikes. There is wood in the huts so that you can light a small fire to warm yourself up afterwards. Staff from Naturskolan and Upplandsstiftelsen will supervise the safety of those who take a dip.

If you want to take a dip, you need to bring

  • a change of clothes
  • a towel
  • dry shoes.

You can choose to take the dip with your own backpack and ice spikes. Otherwise, equipment is available to borrow. Also, make sure you have someone with you who can keep you company and help you change after the dip.

There are other things to do on the ice too! For example, you can have an ice spike race, try throwing a lifeline, try ice fishing, or sculpt in ice. The plowed tracks are perfect for skating—if you don't have your own skates, long-distance skates are available for rent at the manor (sizes 35 and up). We keep a barbecue going on the beach for anyone who wants to grill a sausage or something else they've brought with them.

Even if you are new to Swedish nature, you are very welcome! We can provide information in simple Swedish and English.

Please note! If ice conditions and weather do not allow for a safe and enjoyable day, the activity may be canceled. This will be announced on the Nature School's Facebook page as early as possible, but no later than Friday, 20 January.

How to get there: Take bus no. 108 to the “Hammarskog vägskäl” stop

Drop-in. No advance registration required.

For questions, contact shanti.wittmar@uppsala.se.

A warm welcome to our cold water!

This activity is a collaboration with Campus1477 and Student Health Service at Uppsala University and is a part of the project "Students on tour in our nature" that Campus1477 is carrying out in 2026 together with the Upplandsstiftelsen with the support of Region Uppsala.
