Tips on activities and social contexts
There are lots of social contexts where you as a student can find community, develop as a person – and actually have a lot of fun. Here are some tips on different types of social contexts in Uppsala and Visby where you can get involved, rest your brain or meet new people.
Student unions, student nations and studentassociations
Student unions, nations and student associations are there to make your student life better – both academically and socially. Would you like to get involved and influence student life? Or just find friends? Take part in events by students for students such as job fairs, lectures, choir singing, spex, formal dinners, sports and more. Perfect if you want to combine business with pleasure.
Sports and outdoor activities
Being physically active is good for your whole body. Being active gives you the opportunity to meet new people with similar interests. Both nature experiences and sports have many benefits for your well-being. More on health and exercise in your student city.
Culture and creativity
Theatre groups, film clubs, writing circles and revues – student life is full of creative contexts where you can express your ideas. Search among the nations and student associations to find something that suits you. Outside of student life, there are also various study associations where you can take courses to learn new things related to culture and creativity.
Music and singing
Making music together provides a much-needed break from your studies and a context in which to grow. As a student, there are several opportunities to sing in a choir or play in an orchestra. In Uppsala, many nations have choirs and orchestras, and the university collaborates with several ensembles. On Gotland, there are both choirs and orchestras for students. The University Chaplaincy in Uppsala has a gospel choir.
Gaming and geek culture
Are you interested in gaming and geek culture? Many nations and student associations regularly organise events ranging from role-playing and card games to computer games. On the gaming association Sverok's website (in Swedish), you can find gaming clubs, board game nights, e-sports teams and geek associations. Here, you can meet like-minded people, participate in tournaments or just hang out and play together.
Church communities
Many churches are open meeting places for students and young adults. In addition to church services, concerts, lunches, language cafés and open activities are often organised. The University Chaplaincy in both Uppsala and in Visby organises activities and offers counselling to students, regardless of whether you are a believer or not. There are also several religious student associations in Uppsala.
Volunteering
Getting involved in a non-profit organisation is not only meaningful – it also provides valuable experience. You can volunteer in areas ranging from climate issues and integration to mental health and human rights. It is a way to make a difference, but also to meet new people and grow as a person. At the Volontärbyrån you can search for current volunteer opportunities in English.
Find your social context through the Student Health Service
There are more opportunities to find your context in Student Health Service's range of groups, lectures and activities. Here you can, for example, get support for procrastination, go out into nature, exercise in a group or play table tennis.
