Entry requirements

Fulfilment of the requirements for a Bachelor's degree with Semitic Languages as the main field of study including 82.5 credits in Arabic.

Learning outcomes

After the course, in order to recieve the grade Pass, the student is required to at a minimum be able to:

- translate and using relevant linguistic terminlogy be able to analyse Classical Arabic texts of intermediate to advanced level.

- in relation to the textual study discuss the historical context, syntax and textual linguistics of the selected texts

Content

The course aims at giving skills in reading an analysing intermediate to advanced level classical Arabic texts, including prose, poetry and texts from the Quran. The student is expected to read about 200 normal size pages of Arabic texts of various genre and style, that has not been included in previous courses.

Instruction

The teaching consists of seminars, tutoring and examinatory parts. The students own learning activites are important to the outcome.

Assessment

The examination of the course is conducted through:

a) PM and textual analysis of ca. 10 pages.

b) An oral presentation of text in conjunction with tuition.

c) Written examination.

d) Oral test.

Information on the content and format of the examinatory parts, the date of completion/submission and re-examination is given at the start of the course.

For Pass, at least Pass is required in all moments. For Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is required in all moments of the course.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
