Entry requirements

Knowledge corresponding to a BSc in Natural Sciences/Technology (including Biology and Chemistry with a major in one of these two subjects) or adequate professional experience. Working knowledge in at least one European language other than mother tongue is required as well.

Aims

The purpose of the programme is to prepare the students for practical as well as theoretical work on environmental protection and management. It involves several sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Meteorology, Philosophy, and Law. The programme will produce highly qualified professionals that are able to act in an environmentally proactive way in industry as well as in public organisations and agencies, and that are well prepared to operate on a European and global level.

Content

The 40 point programme consists of the following three blocks:

Intensive Block: a two-week intensive course, bringing students and staff from all participating countries together at one location, highlighting environmental issues at a European and global level, introducing the students to relevant institutions in Europe and to the expertise of the participating institutions. Basic Block (one semester) bringing all students to a common level mainly in Environmental Biology and Environmental Chemistry. Advanced Block (one semester) a wide selection of courses offered by the participating institutions: Assessment and Auditing, Atmospheric Chemistry, Biogeochemistry, Brackish Water Systems, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Law, Environmental Management, Environmental Philosophy, The Baltic Sea, etc. For 60 points a thesis project should be added. Thesis project (one semester) where the students will apply her/his acquired skills to a problem of relevance to environmental issues. This project can be carried out at any one of the participating institutions or, in fact, at any appropriate company or agency.

Instruction

Lessons, group instructions, seminars, literature seminars, case studies, and practical exercises. Study visits, excursions and field trips. Attendance in the seminars and excursions is compulsory. Presentations in groups or separately of individual studies at a seminar. The programme will be taught in English.

Assessment

Examination is arranged at the end of every course. Grades are given at the separate courses in the programme; no summarised grading for the programme as a whole.
