Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student should have

  • in depth understanding of the origina and phylogeny of the vertebrates, as well of their evolutionary history during the Phanerozoic.
  • practical skills using palaeobiological methods
  • competence in synthesizing appropriate information, evaluating ideas, and presenting facts and theories from scientific articles
  • competence in critical comparative analyses of palaeobiological data sets

Content

The origina and evolution of the vertebrates. Palaeobiology, ecology, and palaeobiogeography of main vertebrate groupds. Biotic radiations and exticntions. Practictical work with fossils.

Instruction

Lectures, laboratory experiments, individual projects, seminars. Participation in lectures, seminars and practicals is compulsory. The course is given in English.

Assessment

Written examination corresponding to 7 ECTS-credits at the end of the course. Moreover, the compulsory laboratory work, project work and seminars corresponding to 3 ECTS-credits must also be approved.
