Entry requirements

At least two years of basic courses in Natural Sciences, equivalent to 50 points/75 ECTS credits in Biology. Biology courses should include Cell Biology, Genetics and Gene Technology, Structure and Physiology of Organisms, and Ecology.

Aims

The course is meant to give an increased knowledge of the systematic, biogeography and Swedish faunistics of vertebrate animals, and also to create an improved skill in the field identification of Swedish vertebrates. The course is intended to give a knowledge of more important methods for inventories of vertebrate animals, especially birds. The course should offer basic practical and theoretical skills for taking part in conservation inventories.

Content

Taxonomy and systematics of Swedish vertebrates in relation to the world fauna. Biogeography. Identification. Ecology. Acoustic signals, tracks and signs.

Instruction

Excursions in Uppsala and surroundings. Visits for the purpose of study to zoological parks, lectures, lessons, demonstrations, identification training and exercise in the appli-cations.

Assessment

Examination is arranged during and at the end of the course. A passing grade for the entire course requires passing grades for all practicals. For students who have failed the exams during the course new exams will be arranged at the beginning of the autumn term, after Christmas and at the end of the spring term.
