Entry requirements
25 points in Mathematics, and 25 points in Physics,
including Global Geophysics MN1 5 points; or
45 points in Earth Science, including Global
Geophysics MN1 5 points, and 20 points in
Mathematics and 10 points in Physics. Recommended
previous knowledge: Applied and Environmental
Geophysics MN1.5 points, and Geophysical Data
Processing NV1, 5 points.
Learning outcomes
After successfull completion of the course the student is expected to be able to
- give a detailed description of how the Earth's gravity and magnetic fields can be measured and analysed
- derive methods for mapping structures and processes in the Earth's interior related to the gravity and magnetic fields
- apply the techniques på global problems as well as on regional and local applicaitons.
Content
Description of the Earth's gravity and magnetic
potential fields in local and global coordinates.
The Earth's gravity field, the geoid and the shape
of the Earth. The tidal gravity field. Gravity
fields and density distribution in the Earth's
interior. Isostasy. Methods for measuring gravity.
Calculation and interpretation of gravity anomalies.
Rock densities. Origin of the geomagnetic field and
its variation in time and space. Geomagnetic
measuring techniques. Magnetometric interpretation.
Rock magnetism and paleomagnetics. Numerical
processing of potential field data: corrections,
reductions, transformations, model calculations
and interpretation methods. Studies of the gravity
and magnetic fields of other planets.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons, exercises.
Assessment
Written examination. The written examination corresponds to 6. ECTS and the compulsory part to 1.5 ECTS.
