Aims

To give fundamental knowledge in systems analysis

for modelling and analysis of complex

dynamic systems and practical knowledge in

computer based techniques for performing simulation

experiments and for solving optimisation

problems.

Content

The systems analysis approach to problem solving:

problem formulation, model construction,

validation, model analysis, solutions

techniques, results analysis and implementation.

Operations research: queuing analysis, linear programming, dynamic

programming and decision theory.

Simulation:

principles and applications, time sequencing,

simulation of time continuous models, discrete

event and pseudo-parallel simulation and statistical

methods used in simulation.

Applications: Construction and analysis of biological

models.

Assignments:

1. Discrete event simulation.

2. Modelling and simulation of continuous time

models.

3. Optimisation.

Project:

Systems analysis study.

Instruction

Lectures and lessons. Computer exercises.

Assessment

Written exam at the end of the course. For passing the course, approved project is also required.
