Aims
To give fundamental knowledge of methods for wastewater treatment and environmental effects of
wastewater. Give an introduction to automatic control and give application within the wastewater treatment area.
Apply methods from mathematical modelling, microbiology, and simulation to optimise wastewater treatment processes.
Content
Wastewater treatment - historical background. Municipal and industrial wastewater. Treatment of drinking water.
Environmental issues.
Bioreactors. Microbiological processes. An overview of methods for waste water treatment. Sedimentation and sludge treatment. Modelling, design and optimisation of the activated sludge process. An introduction to automatic control
and how to control wastewater treatment plants.
Visit to a municipal wastewater treatment plant
and a small plant.
Laboratory work:
1. Simulation of simple bioreactors.
2. Simulation of an activated sludge process with nitrogen removal.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course. Passed laboratory course
