Entry requirements

At least two years of basic courses in Natural Sciences, equivalent to 50 points/75 ECTS credits in Biology. Biology courses should include Cell Biology, Genetics and Gene Technology, Structure and Physiology of Organisms, and Ecology. In addition, knowledge corresponding to the course Ecology MN1 is also required.

Aims

The main purpose with the course is the make students prepared for practical as well as theoretical work on biological conservation and environmental protection.

Content

Motives for the conservation of species, biotopes and landscapes. Conservation biology on the levels of populations, metapopulations and communities. Legislation on nature conservation and environmental protection. Applied aspects of areal productivity in terrestrial, limnetic and marine environments, effects, forms of practice, conservation considerations. General Swedish nature conservation, its organisation and forms of protection. Physical planning, natural resources, forms of conservation in wildlife management, hunting and fisheries. International nature conservation, organisations, forms of cooperation. Practical work at an national organisation for nature conservation (3 weeks).

Instruction

Lectures, group instructions, seminars, visits in the purpose of study and practical work. Attendance in the seminars and connected lessons is compulsory.

Assessment

Examination is arranged during and at the end of the course. A passing grade for the entire course requires passing grades for the practical work and seminars.
