Entry requirements

At least 60 credits in the fields of earth sciences, agronomy, forestry or environmental engineering.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the students should have

  • knowledge of the water resources, their exploitation, management and methods for future planning for a sustainable use of water resources in the Baltic region
  • a special knowledge on the state of the water resources in the Baltic region, their present use and management, and the challenge of creating sustainable water use in the different countries in the Baltic Sea catchment area
  • an understanding of the impact of man on water in various parts of the landscape, such as agricultural land, coastal areas and the cities
  • ability to give examples on how a sustainable management of the water resources can be developed by co-operation and the necessary legislative framework for this.

Content

The course is divided into three parts:

1. Water in nature: Water resources in the Baltic basin. The hydrological cycle; rivers, lakes and groundwater. Human impact on the water resources.

2. management of water use: Sustainability and water supply. Water use and management in agriculture. Urban water use and management. Industrial water use and management.

3. River basin management: Activities within the catchment. Management of water resources; recipients, lakes, coasts, rivers, groundwater and sea water. Norms and legislation in water management. Strategies for water management.

Instruction

The course is given in co-operation with universities in the Baltic region. By the use of audio and data conference systems the participating students will follow the course simultaneously over the entire region. The teaching programme consists of lectures, seminars, excursions, and case studies.

Assessment

Examination is held during and at the end of the course. Grading on the scale 3, 4 or 5 is given provided the pilot examination, all exercises and seminars are completed and deemed approved. A student who fails the examination can be examined again either at the beginning of the autumn or the spring term.

Written examination corresponds to 9 ECTS and compulsory pilot examination 6 ECTS.
