Learning outcomes

The course aims to offer students an overview and scientifically based understanding of different perspectives on environmental and developmental issues and to give a critical analysis of some of the most important environmental and developmental problems. The course provides knowledge on different views and ideologies within the environmental and developmental field, training in critical analysis of controversies and of similarities and differences between different views as well as an understanding of how communication over disciplinary borders can contribute to a deeper insight of those issues.

Content

Critical analyses of the contemporary thinking on environment- and development problems. Different perspectives on the state of the world. The development of environmental issues. Ethical, philosophical and scientific views on humans' relations to nature. The history of the concept of development. Different views on and critical analyses of development and technology. Different visions for the future.

Instruction

Lectures, literature seminars, literature studies, group discussions and group exercises. The lectures are given by guest lecturers.
