Learning outcomes

Infection knowledge can be needed within all parts of the healthcare. Certain microbiological agents have been exterminated or can be held under control while new ones appear. The sensitivity for antimicrobial drugs is changed, changes in environment and way of living change the infection panorama. The target group for this course is nurses, professional mainly within infection - and other emergency care but the course can also be of benefit for nurses within other specialities.

Expected learning outcomes:

- The student should on completion of the course be able to account for basic parts of clinical microbiology and immunology and describe at a general level the most common diagnostic methods.

- Should be familiar with transmission routes for common agents and know how to prevent transfer of infection.

- Should have knowledge of the general vaccination programme and travel medicine.

- Should know what disease control hit implies and be able to account for some diseases that are under surveillance.

- Should be able to account for the different stages at handling at common infection conditions such as gastro-enteritis, pneumonia, sepsis, urinary tract infection, meningitis

- Should know which the basic hospital hygienic principles are

- Should be able to describe basic principles within wound care

- Should have knowledge of handling hepatitit, endocarditis, spondylitis, arthritis, tropical infections, infections in the immunocompromised host.

- Should have knowledge of antibiotics, antiviral and antimycotic drugs and common preparation groups and their side effects.

- Should independently have carried out and presented an advanced assignment within infection healthcare

Content

The course deals with basic microbiology and immunology, hospital hygienic - and disease control aspects preventive work in the form of pre-travel advice and vaccinations, antibiotics, resistance problem and antiviral means. A large part is devoted to provide a more in-depth knowledge of different infectious diseases.

Instruction

The course consists of fixed teaching with whole-group lectures a weekday about every third week, group assignment and self-study.

Assessment

Be completed with written examination.
