Materials Science I: Fundamental Concepts.
Aims
After completing the course the student should be able to:
- describe the electronic structure of atoms.
- explain the theoretical background of the periodic system and use the periodic system to describe trends in properties of the elements.
- describe various types of chemical bonding and predict bond strength in a qualitative way.
- describe the relation between chemical bonding and physical properties of matter.
- describe methods of production of the most common metals and silicon.
- explain stability, geometry and magnetic properties of complexes.
- describe the characteristics of solid state at atomic level, in particular fundamental crystal structures and solid solution.
- describe basic concepts of crystallography.
- interpret binary phase diagrams and use these to calculate amounts of different phases.
- describe basic concepts in reaction kinetics and perform calculations using reaction rate, reaction order, rate constant and activation energy.
- explain the meaning of common thermodynamic quantities and use thermodynamic data in calculations.
- describe galvanic cells and perform calculations using data from tables.
Content
Chemical bonding including crystal field theory. The periodic table with a survey of the chemical properties of the elements. Manufacture of the elements. The crystalline state. Reaction kinetics. Chemical thermodynamics. Electrochemistry with corrosion. Phase diagrams. Laboratory work.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course. Passed laboratory course is required. Practical exercises and laboratory work are assigned 1 point.
