Aims
To give applied knowledge about the mechanical properties of polymer materials and polymer
matrix composites as well as design rules for these classes of material.
Content
Structure of polymeric molecules and polymeric solids. Rubber elasticity. Viscoelasticity: creep,
stress relaxation and dynamic damping. Yield and fracture. Reinforced polymer materials.
Forming: extrusion, injection moulding, thermoforming, compression and transfer moulding.
Design: materials selection, design rules.
Laboratory work: Identification of common plastics. Extrusion. Injection moulding.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course. Passed laboratory work is also required.
