Aims
After completion of the course, the student will posses fundamental knowledge within the field of polymeric materials
- Explain and understand what a polymer is.
- Describe the molecular structure for several different polymers.
- Describe the most common processing methods of polymeric materials, such as extrusion, injection moulding, rotation moulding, vacuum forming, blow moulding.
- Give examples of different applications of polymeric materials and composites.
As an example should you be able to answer following questions, based upon the knowledge you have received in this class:
- Why is fibercomposites used in military aircrafts?
- How come the same material is used in artificial hip-joints and plastic bags?
- Why are some polymers transparent and some opaque?
- How would I manufacture a car tire, eye-glasses, bicycle, heat resistant clothes, sewer and golf balls?
Content
Polymeric materials: molecular structure, crystallinity, mechanical and thermomechanical properties, processing methods and practical applications.
Instruction
Lectures, laboratory work and project assignment.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course (2 points). Passed laboratory and project work is also required (1 point).
