The course is part of the course package International Media and Communication Studies, 60 högskolepoäng/60 ECTS.

Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to make the students aware of and able to compare and analyse different models and systems of media policy and media regulation. After the course the students should be able to

Knowledge and understanding

- demonstrate an understanding of the principle of freedom of speech and press in a global setting

- demonstrate an understanding of the principles behind a range of media policy and regulation models

- be able to discuss and recognise the pros and cons of specific forms of policy and regulation

- demonstrate an understanding of media ethics and principles of ethics in the media

Skills and capacities

- describe, compare and analyse national media systems in terms of their forms of policy and regulation

- discuss and reflect over freedom of speech and press in a national, regional and global setting

- apply ethical models for analysing ethical problem in media work and to give arguments for the choice of specific models

Evaluative capacity and approach

- discuss and analyse ethical problems connected to media practice and different forms of policy and regulation

- show awareness of the social embeddedness of problems connected to different forms of media policy and regulation and ability to address and discuss such issues

Content

The course presents an overview of media policy issues and regulation of the media in a national, regional and global framework. It puts focus on constitutional rights (as freedom of speech and press) and on the regulation of broadcast media and Internet. Ethical aspects of media practice are presented and discussed.

Lectures and seminars.

Assessment

Compulsory coursework. Essay or written examination. The course has the grades VG (Väl godkänd), G (Godkänd) and U (Underkänd).
