Aims
Electricity and magnetism are fundamental parts of physics with extensive technical application. The
goal of the course is to give a basic knowledge about electromagnetic fields and to give an
introduction electrical measurement techniques.
Content
Electrostatics: Electric charge, Coulomb's law, electric field and potential, the displacement vector,
Gauss's law, Millikan's experiment, capacitance, electric potential and field from electric dipole,
atomic dipoles, polarisation, dielectrics, electrostatic energy, forces in capacitors, capacitor batteries.
Electric current: current density, the continuity equation, Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's laws, Joule's law,
emf, non-linear resistances, temperature dependence of resistance, charging and discharging of
capacitors.
Stationary electromagnetism: magnetic field, magnetic force, Biot-Savart's law, the
current unit, magnetic dipoles, magnetic polarisation, dia-, para- and ferromagnetism, hysteresis, hysteresis loss, magnetic circuits, permanent magnets, boundary conditions of the magnetic fields.
Electromagnetic induction: Faraday's law, Lenz' law, self-induction, magnetic field energy, currents in R-L circuits, mutual inductance. Maxwell's equations.
Alternating currents : phase diagrams, the
jw- method, complex power, coupled circuits, the transformer, three-phase alternating currents.
Laboratory work: Oscilloscope, Capacitance experiments, Magnetic fields, Induction, Hysteresis,
Alternating current.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.
Assessment
Examinations, which comprises both conceptual questions as well as ordinary problems, at the end
of the course. Passed laboratory course is also required. Homework assignments can be given
during the course.
