Aims
The aim of the course is to give basic understanding of the space environment, espe-cially within our own solar system, and for fundamental principles of space transporta-tion, which is necessary for applications within space technology as well as for further understanding of space as such. Space is not empty, but filled with a plasma, which un-der the influence of the magnetic fields from the sun and the planets organises itself into different regions with different characteristics. The course will therefore give knowl-edge and understanding of the physics behind these processes, and their interaction with space vehicles, and knowledge about the principles of propulsion in space and orbit calculations.
Content
Rocket principle, motion in a central force field, satellite orbits, interplanetary orbits. Existence of plasma in space, ideal magnetohydrodynamics, magnetic fields in space. Solar radiation, solar atmosphere, solar activity, solar wind, heliosphere, solar sails. Motion of charged particles in magnetic fields, the magnetosphere, radiation belts. The ionosphere and the plasmasphere. Currents in magnetosphere-ionosphere systems, aurora, magnetic storms. Thermal interaction of spacecraft with the local environment.
