Space physics I. Electromagnetic field theory. Plasma physics is recommended.
Aims
The aim of this course is to give deeper knowledge of space physics and applications, and is a continuation of the course Space Physics I (3 p). Especially the dynamics of the space plasma is treated, where energy transport through different kinds of plasma waves and electromagnetic waves are of fundamental importance.
Content
Shock waves and boundary layers, the cellular structure of space. The interaction of other celestial bodies with the solar wind, ionospheres (Venus, Mars, Titan) and mag-netospheres (the giant planets and Mercury). The dynamics of the space plasma in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and two-fluid theory. Waves in an unmagnetised plasma, radio wave propagation, electrostatic waves, magnetohydrodynamic waves, energy transport, instabilities and damping, particle acceleration. Dynamics of the mag-netosphere, substorms and space weather. Electrical interaction of spacecraft with the local environment. Ion engines.
