Aims

The aim of the course is to help the students gain a deeper understanding of the central problems in the philosophy of art and in philosophical aesthetics.

Content

Fundamental concepts in philosophical aesthetics such as the concept of art, representation, expression are discussed by analysing original texts of contemporary relevance. Equally important are questions concerning the interpretation of works of art and the evaluation of works of art. Thus the relationship between description, evaluation and interpretation of works of art will be discussed. Another important theme in recent philosophical aesthetics is the question concerning the overall value of art practice, its function(s) in contemporary culture and its cognitive status.

Instruction

The teaching consists of lectures and seminars.

Assessment

Examination consists of writing an essay.
