Aims
The purpose of this course is to provide the medical student with knowledge of the most common diseases and ailments that affect the ears, nose and throat, and of such aspects of audiology, phoniatrics and otoneurology as are of clinical and scientific importance for every physician.
Content
The course of instruction requires attendance at all clinical and out-patient lectures and all demonstrations, participation in clinical rounds and practical duties, and study of the literature.
Within the speciality, instruction is given in diagnostics, therapy, and prophylaxis as they pertain to the field of oto-rhino-laryngological diseases and complaints. In addition, the teaching covers the general principles of the hearing process and also the subject of audiology, where attention is paid to the types of problems encountered by the general practitioner, and also to the diagnostic possibilities available at the specialist clinic. Particular interest is focused in this context on the early diagnosis of tumours within the oto-rhino-laryngological field. Similarly, the scope of the course includes a review of the aetiology, treatment and prevention of vocal and speech disorders. The course also deals with occupational medical problems in the ear, nose and throat in order to help the student to develop a critical and prophylactic attitude towards diseases and disorders affecting these regions. Knowledge of a few of the most common forms of clinical intervention should also be acquired during the course.
Instruction
The course is scheduled to take 8 weeks in parallel with the course in ophthalmology. Theoretical studies, study of the literature and clinical duties at the Department should be undertaken simultaneously during the course. As the methodological training is concentrated to the early part of the course, the medical students should soon gain sufficient expertise to examine patients in the approved manner. Students will receive a detailed schedule of lectures on everyday diseases and ailments that are likely to be encountered in this speciality. Students participate in both out-patient and in-patient care. So-called "tumour conferences" are held weekly, at which physicians from several departments participate. A number of conferences are arranged during the course.
