Learning outcomes

The course intends to give an introduction to the grammar of the classical Hebrew and give an orientation in the cultures in the Near East.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

With respect to module 1: see Basic course in Hebrew (5HE121).

With respect to module 2: Biblical Hebrew The course intends to give extended knowledge in classical Hebrew morphology, syntax and skills in reading, translating and analysing simple texts on classical Hebrew and elementary skills in interpreting classical Hebrew texts

On completion of the course, to earn the grade Pass the student should at least be able to:

account for the morphology of Biblical Hebrew and the fundamental features of the syntax with using basic linguistic terminology,

with aid translate simple prose text from Hebrew,

without aid translate textbook- and Biblical texts from Hebrew to Swedish,

at the reading of prose text apply the rules of classical Hebrew form and syntax.

With respect to module 3, The old Israel and the cultures in the Near East:

• account for the basic outline of the history of Mesopotamia, Palestine and Egypt,
• account for the fundamental features of the history of ancient Israel, the biblical and post-biblical Hebrew literature,
• account for the main problems at the determination of the text of the Hebrew Bible.

Content

The course consists of three modules: Basic course in Hebrew (7.5 credits), Biblical Hebrew (15 credits), and The ancient Israel and the cultures in the Near East (7.5 credits).

Instruction

The instruction consists of lectures, exercises and assessment. The student's own learning activities are crucial for completion of the course.

Assessment

The course is assessed through oral and written exams. The course requirements are announced in writing at the start of the course by the convenor of the course. To receive the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction in at least three of the included modules is required.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a degree if equivalent parts have been studied within another course included in the degree.
