Learning outcomes
After the course the student shall
- know the composition of the atmosphere and its vertical strukture
- understand radiation processes in the earth-atmosphere system, which results in the earth's climate
- have basic knowledge about the dynamic of the atmosphere and be able to calculate the vind speed at different height in the atmosphere
- have basic knowledge about the atmospheres thermodynamic and be able to quantify the effect of vertical transport of air
- understand the influence of friction on the flow in the atmosphere and be able to used metods describing how to quantify turbulent flows in the atmosphere
have basic knowledge about the atmospheric boundary layer
- have basic knowledge about the physicks of the upper atmosphere, with focus on processes in the stratosphere
- be able to classify the climate at a given location from observations
The primary goal of the course is to give the student basic knowledge about the atmosphere and the earth's climate relevant for the student in its role as an engineer.
Content
Composition, average structure and the radiation budget of the atmosphere. Dynamics of the Atmosphere, with emphasis on mixing and transport on scales ranging from millimeters to thousands of kilometers. The general circulation of the atmosphere. The climate of the earth, global change and climate modelling. The atmospheric boundary layer and turbulence. Exchange processes at the earth-atmosphere interface. Circulation in the stratosphere. The dynamic coupling between the troposphere and the stratosphere.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course and passed laboratory course.
